Previously part of the team behind El Sicario Room 164 (FIPRESCI Award at the 2010 Venice Film Festival) and Fire at Sea (Golden Bear at Berlin in 2016), French production outfit Les Films d’Ici will once again be partnering up with star documentary maker Gianfranco Rosi for his fifth feature, Nocturne.

The Italian director, who also has Below Sea Level (revealed in the Orizzonti section at Venice in 2008) and Sacro GRA (Golden Lion at Venice in 2013) to his credit, will this time explore the borders of the Middle East under cover of night in order to meet various characters in Lebanon, Syria, Iran and perhaps even Egypt. The filmmaker is following a rather extreme hunch of his: in this region of the world, it is full immersion that enables a point of view free of prejudice.

Nocturne, which is currently in production, is being staged by 21Uno Film, by Donatella Palermo for Stemal Entertainment, and by Serge Lalou and Camille Laemlé for Les Films d’Ici. Among the partners are Arte France Cinéma, Rai Cinema, Istituto Luce, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, and Météore Films, which will act as the French distributor. The sales will be handled by Doc & Film International, which has taken care of this side of things for all of the filmmaker’s other features.
