Luciano Sovena: Luce's future

L. SovenaLuciano Sovena is continuing his work as managing director of the Istituto Luce, after being confirmed in the position following a meeting of the new board of management. He continues with his overview on production, acquisitions and documentaries and Sovena thanked the board members and president Flavio De Luca, for his re-appointment.


In a few days time Luce will be officially announcing a few important upcoming projects, including an international co-production about Nelson Mandela to be directed by Bille August. Naturally work continues apace on documentaries and first works as well. Luce also has a strong commitment in the distribution sphere, recently handling the Italian releases of important films like Private, the Golden Leopard winner at Locarno, The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino and Sophie Scholl, which won two Silver Bears at Berlin in 2005 and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. "It is an approach we will continue in the future, in the hope we will have a budget to allow us to work even better than we have been able to do up to now", said Sovena.

 

Luce's latest high profile purchase for release is the Golden Bear winner at this years Berlinale, the Bosnian film Grbavica by Jasmila Zbanic, which Luce acquired as the jury led by Charlotte Rampling was gettino ready to announce its verdict. "The film is currently being dubbed and it will be released in the spring after an Italian premiere at the EuropaCinema Festival, in Viareggio from April 20 to 25", the MD told CinecittàNews.


Also coming out in Italian cinemas the near future are Luce releases Mater Natura, the first work by Massimo Andrei which won the GAN prize at Critics Week in Venice; The Shadow Dancer by Brad Mirman with Joshua Jackson, Harvey Keitel, Claire Forlani and Giancarlo Giannini, which went down very well at Taormina; Sopra e sotto il ponte by Alberto Bassetti; Fuoco su di me by Lamberto Lambertini with Omar Sharif, Le grand Voyage by Ismaël Ferroukhi, Free Zone by Amos Gitai with Nathalie Portman and La straniera by Marco Turco.
