For the last three months of his life Alberto Sordi was housebound. He was unable to take part at the tribute that the Roma Film Festival organised in December, that included a retrospective of 80 of his best films.
Those who wondered why one of Italy's most popular actors had withdrawn from public life were told by Sordi's agents and friends, Maria Ruhle and Paola Comin, that he was unable to move because of a severe case of arthritis. Informed sources, however, say that Sordi died of pneumonia. Adriano Pintaldi, the president of the Roma Film Festival, was a frequent guest at Sordi's Roman home in Piazza Numa Pompilio, where the actor-director lived with his devoted sister. Pintaldi recorded a speech Sordi made for his festival. Sordi received Pintaldi seated in an armchair and appeared to be on good form. Those in the know, however, affirm that Sordi would never have accepted to appear in public in less than perfect form.
