Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio, and Mario are just like brothers when the Second World War erupts in Rome. It's 1943, the conflict is in full swing, and the eternal city hosts the circus where they work. Israel, the owner and their putative father, disappears in the attempt of finding an escape route overseas. The four protagonists are adrift. Without his help and, more importantly, without the circus, they lose their social status and feel just like freaks on the loose through a city in the war.

After the extraordinary success of They Call Me Jeeg, Gabriele Mainetti is shooting Freaks out. Based on an original subject by Nicola Guaglianone, the script was penned by Guaglianone himself and Gabriele Mainetti. Musics are composed by Michele Braga with Mainetti.

The film stars Aurora Giovinazzo, Claudio Santamaria, Pietro Castellitto, Giancarlo Martini with the participation of Giorgio Tirabassi, Max Mazzotta, and Franz Rogowski. Shooting are taking place in Rome and Calabria for 12 weeks.

Freaks out is produced by Lucky Red and Goon Films with Rai Cinema, in coproduction with Gapfinders (Belgium).
