The 36th edition of the Annecy Italian Film Festival, which unspooled from 24-30 September, forged ahead with the rejuvenation process that was initiated last year by its new artistic director, Francesco Giai Via. This year, the gathering was opened by the Cannes award winner Happy as Lazzaro by Alice Rohrwacher (out in France on 7 November), which was handed the 2018 Sergio Leone Award, and was brought to a close by The Summer House by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (revealed out of competition at Venice and set to hit French screens on 30 January next year).
The 2018 Grand Prix went to Menocchio by Alberto Fasulo, unveiled in competition at Locarno, while a Special Jury Prize was bestowed upon Beautiful Things by Giorgio Ferrero and Federico Biasin (premiered last year at the Venice Film Festival, in the Biennale Cinema programme). Meanwhile, the audience crowned Boys Cry by Damiano and Fabio D'Innocenzo, a surprise hit in the Berlinale Panorama, which will be released in France on 14 November by ARP Sélection.
