There’s something Italian in the Albanian film set to represent Albania at the Oscars 2021 as Best International Feature. Open Door by Florenc Papas, produced by Albania’s Bunker Film + and Circle Production, is co-produced by Italy’s Riccardo Neri for Lupin Film as well.

The film participated in many international festivals and won the Cineuropa Award Best Film and Audience Best Film Award at the Lecce European Film Festival 2020. Papas’ delicate debut tells the story of a single pregnant woman who, back from Italy and aided by her sister, looks for a man who could act as her husband in front of her authoritarian father.

Riccardo Neri states: “As I’ve always wished to make European films, at the 2017 Sofia Meetings I met Florenc Papas who was presenting this project. I was enthusiastic about the story and Florenc as a director. We started writing the script and working on the production with Eno Milkani, the Albanian producer. I was interested in collaborating with a country that is geographically close to us, but quite far work-wise. The result is a simple and pure film, and a very much accomplished one. Florenc is a skilled narrator, with a specific sensibility. We’re already working on his next project and in the meantime, we keep our fingers crossed for the journey of Open Doors.”
