The title is Casanova’s Return and will star Toni Servillo in the leading role. The new film by Gabriele Salvatores is adapted by the eponymous story by Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler, and is penned by the director with Umberto Contarello and Sara Mosetti. The film will unfold over two parallel narrative lines.

The first focuses on Giacomo Casanova, now an old man and a guest at a friend’s house in Venice. Here he meets Marcolina, a sort of proto-feminist who is in a relationship with a young soldier, Lorenzo. However, a gambling debt will push Marcolina in the arms of Casanova, stirring a fight between the two rivals. The second story follows a 70-something director who is about to shoot Casanova’s Return. On the film set, the man falls in love with a young woman who will get pregnant.

According to rumors, Salvatores will shoot the period part in color, and the contemporary one in black and white. Produced by Indiana Production with Rai Cinema and the support of Regione Veneto, with a budget of 7 million Euro, the film will be shot in Venice in September.
