The Selection Committee for the film to be designated as the Italian candidate for the Oscars, appointed by Anica upon request of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, composed by Alberto Barbera, Nicola Borrelli, Francesca Calvelli, Edoardo De Angelis, Piera Detassis, Andrea Goretti, Benedetto Habib, Federica Lucisano, Paolo Mereghetti, Lucia Milazzotto, Anna Praderio, voted for The Hand of God by Paolo Sorrentino to represent Italy at the 94th edition of the Academy Awards in the category International Feature Film Award. The Hand of God will first run for the 15-title shortlist that will be unveiled on December 21st. The nominations announcement will be then made on February 8th, 2022. The award ceremony is scheduled on March 27th, 2022, in Los Angeles.
Sorrentino states: “I am glad to represent Italy at the Oscars. I warmly thank the Committee for choosing my film among so many beautiful works. I wish to thank The Apartment, Fremantle and Netflix for the support. The Hand of God is my most important and painful film, and I’m happy that today all this sorrow finally turns into joy.” He also adds: “This is only the first step. What’s beautiful in this race is that it’s the only competition in the world in which landing among the top five is already a victory. Long live Italian cinema!”
